In a fast-paced environment, a graduate can no longer rely on just skills, backed by certificates, degrees, or reference letters from lecturers or family members. Companies are also no longer just looking for the candidate with exceptional work ethics or a pretty cover letter. What we often fail to grasp is the dynamics of the current job market, the rife competition, the desperate search for opportunities and the expectations from employers.
The graduates of today and tomorrow, have a greater understanding of technological and digital transformation. Complex concepts that previous generations studied and earned qualifications for, are grasped and effectively applied by teenagers on TikTok and other platforms, with no theoretical knowledge needed. Employers need to embrace this era and consider these skills when onboarding graduates. The digital era has levelled the playfield somewhat since every generation can learn from the other and the younger generations are no longer just silent observers.
Instead of blaming the generation gap for our business struggles, we should embrace it so that we can rather credit the generation gap for our successes.
Each generation learns a set of new skills and every generation challenges the status quo of the current market leaders and has their own specific value system. These changes can bring uncertainty to the those holding onto their own assumptions, but change is imminent and should be embraced.
Just look at Yoco, a local fintech startup that changed the way of processing card payments for small business owners, providing them with an affordable alternative. Steve Jobs and his tech giant company Apple, challenged the status quo and still, today encourage its loyal customers to think differently. Sure, there were the skeptics, but the changes brought through these actions changed history and the digital era as we knew it. And the changes we make today, will continue to change history. They show us that human beings are not meant to stagnate in the same state and routine forever, we are too smart for this.
This underlines our motto and the reason for Gradlinc’s existence: We believe in a better tomorrow and that there is always room for improvement and growth. Teaching a young person to drive is as much of a benefit to them becoming independent as it is to driving you around when you are not able to anymore. By helping graduates secure their first jobs and get a steady foothold in the employment space, we equip them to be the successful leaders of the future that we need them to be. We invest in the youth because they represent the future of business, leadership, and growth.
